General Description

This waveguide filter simulation is an educational example for demonstrating various solving techniques for the same model. The waveguide filter can be simulated by either the Time-Domain solver including AR-filter (first example), the general Frequency solver, the Resonant Fast Frequency solver, or the Eigenmode solver. In addition, CST DESIGN STUDIO can be applied to simulate the whole model after using half of the geometry as a model in CST MICROWAVE STUDIO as demonstrated in the second example.

Structure Generation

The structure is modelled by defining a curve using the extrude option or defining a brick and removing some parts. If half of the part is defined the geometry can be created using the mirroring option.

Solver Setup

In order to enable a calculation two waveguide ports are defined at each side of the filter. The working frequency range is set to 30 - 40 GHz.

Post Processing

Performing a transient calculation of the full model (first example) using waveguide ports, the resulting time signals are automatically converted into the desired scattering parameters. All these results are listed in the navigation tree in the folder 1D Results and demonstrate the wave propagation of the filter.

The second example only simulates half of the structure within the transient solver of CST MICROWAVE STUDIO. Again the resulting time signals are converted automatically into scattering parameters and can be viewed in the navigation tree.

These scattering parameters are then used in CST DESIGN STUDIO to obtain the results of the full model. The whole procedure is setup as an S-parameter task and is started directly within CST DESIGN STUDIO. The transient simulation is then automatically triggered in case that the S-parameters are not already available.
